Joseph D. Stewart, Assistant Director, Global Maritime Intelligence Integration, National Maritime Intelligence-Integration Office




Joe Stewart joined the National Maritime Intelligence-Integration Office (NMIO) in October 2009. Primary responsibilities include integrating the Center's lines of operations in response to the requirements of the Global Maritime Community of Interest. Mr. Stewart ensures NMIO's expertise in analysis and collection integration, IT architecture, and information sharing is properly aligned to serve the interagency, industry, international, and state, local and tribal partners.

Prior to assuming his duties at NMIO, Mr. Stewart was a member of the National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC), serving in many capacities during his five year tenure. Duties included the Department of Homeland Security representative to NCTC's predecessor organization, the Terrorist Threat Integration Center, the Deputy Director for Operations Support and NCTC Chief of Staff, respectively. In 2005, Mr. Stewart became a member of the Senior National Intelligence Service within the Office of the Director of National Intelligence cadre.

Mr. Stewart enjoyed 28 years in the United States Navy first as a Surface Warfare Officer before transferring to the Naval Intelligence Community. Assignments include amphibious ships, cruisers, aircraft carriers and shore duty to fleet and national level operational intelligence centers. During two tours at the Pentagon, Mr. Stewart served as the Assistant J2 (Joint Staff) and the Executive Officer to the Director of the Defense Intelligence Agency. He was the Commanding Officer of the Fleet Intelligence Training Center, Pacific and retired with the rank of Captain.

Mr. Stewart is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy from The Great Class of ' 73. He graduated with distinction from the Naval War College and holds two masters degrees in the areas of international security and strategic studies. Personal awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, and the National Intelligence Superior Service Medal.

Mr. Stewart is a native of Baltimore, Maryland.
